This is a new installment in the “Let’s Compare” series. You can view the Adobe Target vs Optimizely post here.

Adobe Target and Adobe Journey Optimizer are both powerful personalization and optimization tools within the Adobe Experience Cloud. Both excel at delivering tailored web experiences, but their approaches and strengths differ. Here’s a breakdown of how they compare for onsite personalization to help you decide which aligns most with your unique needs and strategies.

Real-Time Personalization

Adobe Target (AT): At its core, Target is an onsite optimization tool. While it can be flexible in performing various other actions and capabilities, it’s important to remember Target was designed to A/B test and optimize. Target leverages proprietary algorithms for instant personalization based on visitor behavior and profile data, which can be used to create audiences and deliver personalized experiences throughout the user’s visit. Target also supports dynamic content delivery with Auto-Personalization and Auto-Target activities. These two algo-driven features are enabled by Target’s machine learning capabilities, essentially matching the “best” experience to each visitor based on their unique profile.

Adobe Journey Optimizer (AJO): AJO uses Adobe Experience Platform (AEP) for real-time decisioning, enabling contextual personalization at scale. AJO excels at triggering personalized web content based on real-time events, like cart abandonment for example. AJO is viewed as a stronger “real-time” trigger tool, that can personalize based on a variety of real-time actions, like page views, exit intent, CTA clicks, cart abandon, form completion and much more. While some of these triggers can be built in Target, there are limitations and the development of these experiences would be much more manual than in AJO.

Adobe Target vs Adobe Journey Optimizer

Audience Segmentation

AT: Target integrates with Adobe Audience Manager for precise, behavior-based audience segments. Target also enables the usage of profile scripts to create custom audiences based on various onsite behaviors. For example, a script can be written in Target to count the number of visits to a particular page, whether a visitor completed a step in the checkout process or the customer’s favorite shopping category. These data points are then available in the audience builder and can be used to deliver more relevant onsite content and messaging. Learn more about out-of-the-box audiences, custom parameters or other segmentation options in Target here.

AJO: AJO unifies customer profiles from AEP, combining online and offline data for segmentation. Journey Optimizer also simplifies segment activation for web personalization with real-time profile updates. Per Adobe documentation, AJO is natively built for real-time use cases as “data is available in the moment”. Any Experience Platform audience can be used in AJO journeys, as documented here.

Content Delivery and Customization

AT: Offers a Visual Experience Composer (VEC) for intuitive, drag-and-drop content changes. Target also supports personalized product recommendations and dynamic content blocks.  It is natively built to personalize and test layouts, copy, CTAs, design components, features & functionality onsite.

AJO: Uses a web designer interface for code-based and visual web content personalization.  AJO enables inline messaging and overlays for seamless, journey-driven web experiences. AJO features what Adobe refers to as “streaming segmentation”, that is driven by customizable business and customer event signals. These signals can be used to trigger personalized offers and experiences across various channels.

Testing and Optimization

AT: Target provides robust A/B and multivariate testing capabilities to deliver personalized experiences. As you’d expect with a tool that boasts testing as its bread-and-butter, Target has several powerful out-of-the-box testing capabilities. Auto-Personalization and Auto-Target deliver the “best” experience based on visitor profile data, while the Auto-Allocate feature shifts traffic to top-performing test variations in real-time. Product recommendations deliver the most relevant items or “entities” to each visitor based on customizable criteria, while more rudimentary features like Category Affinity have also proven to be highly impactful on conversion rates.

AJO: While AJO does support A/B testing use cases within journeys, its core focus is more on journey-level optimization. Testing is streamlined for web interactions tied to broader campaign goals. AJO is capable of testing experiences, however its strength lies within its power to orchestrate the entire journey of customer touchpoints across multiple channels.

Integrations with Adobe Ecosystem

AT: Target seamlessly integrates with Adobe Analytics and Audience Manager for deep insights and performance reporting. By leveraging the A4T integration all Target activity data is passed directly to Analytics for more extensive analysis. This enables marketers to pull in any of their existing Analytics events and variables into A/B test reports for more extensive and consistent reporting.

AJO: AJO is built natively on AEP, ensuring tight integration with unified customer profiles. AJO also tracks user interactions across web and other channels for actionable journey reporting and metrics. Live Report is a tool that can be used to measure and visualize journey performance in real-time, with several customizable features and widgets to add to the dashboard. You can learn more about Live Report here.

Scalability of Experiences

AT: Scales well for complex websites with high traffic and diverse audiences. Target handles multiple simultaneous personalization activities with ease. There’s more documentation around the specific content limitations in Target here, but most websites will never run into these bandwidth issues.

AJO: Designed for massive, real-time interactions across web and other channels. Scales personalization by leveraging AEP to process interaction and signal data, to deliver appropriate experiences and messages across these channels. Similar to Target, the AJO limitations are unlikely to be an issue for most websites. For example, the maximum number of journeys live at a time is 100, and activities per journey is 50.

TL;DR

Adobe Target and Adobe Journey Optimizer both shine in onsite personalization, but their strengths cater to different needs. Target is ideal for deep testing and standalone web personalization, while AJO excels in real-time, journey-driven experiences tied to unified customer data. Your choice depends on whether you prioritize web-focused optimization or holistic journey orchestration. As my kid says when I ask which dessert they want, “why not both?”.
