Cracking the Integration Challenge: Activating Anonymous Adobe Experience Platform Audiences in Google Ads
Intro
With the constant changes in the macro cookie landscape, many businesses are finding it challenging to use the native integrations of their toolsets to effectively engage with anonymous audiences as they once could. In this article, we’ll walk you through a bespoke solution Softcrylic crafted for a client, bridging Adobe Experience Platform (AEP) with Google Ads. This integration aimed to empower our client to better target their anonymous customers and prospects.
The Challenge
AEP, or Adobe Experience Platform, is a tool that primarily serves for audience creation and activation. One of AEP’s core values emerges when it integrates with ad platforms, relaying audience data to various activation channels. Built on AEP, the Real Time Customer Data Platform (RT-CDP or CDP) takes on the task of segmentation. Think of AEP as a vast Data Lake brimming with unstructured data, while CDP refines this data into actionable profiles.
On the other side, we have Google Ads, Google’s advertising platform that facilitates targeted promotions across search, display, and video realms. Given our client’s goal to connect with both identified and anonymous audience segments, Google Ads was indispensable. Yet, meshing AEP with Google Ads demanded a tailored approach, especially given the evolving landscape that increasingly limits the use of anonymous data.
To give a clearer picture: our client sought to leverage behavioral site data, accumulated in the CDP, to reach out to engaged prospects via ad channels. As it stands, the direct AEP-Google Ads link only supports known identities (like SHA-256 emails, phone numbers, etc.). Purely anonymous groups can’t be dispatched to Google Ads using the standard AEP connector from RT-CDP. The evolving landscape presented significant challenges in aligning with our client’s specific needs.

AEP is Adobe’s one-stop shop for all marketing technology needs. Softcrylic has partnered with Adobe on all fronts: Delivery, Alpha and Beta testing and Application Development.
The Solution
In addressing this obstacle, we collaborated with our vendor partners to unearth potential solutions. It soon became evident that there wasn’t a ready-made solution for transmitting anonymous CDP segments to Google Ads. The root of this challenge was mainly Google’s stringent rules, not any shortcoming of AEP.
However, a potential detour caught our eye. By employing Adobe Target, we could assign an audience to a CDP segment. Then, rather than curating a tailored experience for them, we’d activate the Google Tag. This innovative strategy enabled us to harmonize the audience on Google’s end, seamlessly linking the anonymous data gathered by AEP to the Google Ads framework.
To trial this concept, we integrated a new Google tag on one of the client’s online platforms. Serving as a conversion indicator, this tag paved the way for us to orchestrate using Adobe Target. With this tag in place, the website could channel CDP qualification metrics to Google Ads, ensuring efficient retargeting of the segment on the activation platform.
